Meet Alec, Dogs XL's True Treasure!

Alec is a gorgeous, sweet and until now, undiscovered treasure.  He was on the euthanasia list despite his wonderful demeanor because of skin issues.    Dogs XL is excited to save this boy.   We want him to have the best diagnostic care so his skin issues can be resolved and he can be more comfortable.   More diagnostics are needed such as skin scrapes, allergy testing, bloodwork and what ever else our vets recommend.   Most likely he will need prescription hypoallergenic food during this diagnostic process to help weed out the causes that are keeping him from being furry and fabulous!
Donations and sponsorship are welcome for sweet Alec!

We included Alec's good samaritan letter for you to read.  Careful, its a tear jerker.

Alec with his foster!

Hi Dogs XL,

I know you just took in a great group of dogs (amazing bunch), and this is probably not the best time to be pestering, but I really want to share this boy Alec with you.  The shelter didn't want me to post pictures of Alec, because of his skin problem (see photos, he's beautiful, red hound-ish looking??).  The shelter assumes no one would want Alec....that he would be put to sleep at the end of his 7 day stray hold.  I have spent time with Alec and waited and waited and waited to get the all clear that I could post Alec's pictures and try to find help for him (got my hand slapped several times). Finally, tonight,  I was told I am allowed to post his pictures (his stray hold is up tomorrow). Two skin scrapes for demodex have come back negative. I have taken pictures, video taped Alec in the cat room *(click here to see video)*, he met a few big dogs (he's very non-confrontational) and a small dog, too (small dog wanted to eat Alec, and Alec stood their wagging his tail).  I see something special about this guy.

The volunteer vet who comes to the shelter once a week will see Alec this week. The shelter's  vet tech and volunteer vet will both have ultimate say in whether Alec can leave the shelter or if he will be pts---and now I'm crying---it's just not right for him to be pts (put to sleep) if someone out there wants Alec, regardless of his currently damaged, itchy-scratchy skin (I have ugly skin, so I sympathize with Alec).  In the meantime, I just wanted to share this boy with you. Right now, there are open kennels, and I was told that the shelter would not put him to sleep, until at least he can see the volunteer vet later this week.
Thank you,
*good samaritan*.

Deuce Update!

Here is a great picture of Deuce at his foster's home PRIOR to becoming sick.

Todays Vet update!

They are in love at the vets office.  They have given him a little more room to move today and he currently sunning himself.
His respiratory status remains cautious with continued labored breathing.  He is not out of the woods yet, but might be turning a corner.  Drumroll please.....  the office said that he was able to keep a little food down and ready... he peed and pooped!   This might be weird to some, but we look at it as "all systems GO!"

Please help Dogs XL do their job!   The vet is the safest place for him right now and until he medically discharged, we are occurring ongoing bills.  Please donate to help our big old LUG!

Deuce is fighting for his life and we need your help!

Awhhhh Deuce!   You have us all so worried!

Deuce and his foster buddy.

Oh Deuce, our lovable Alaskan Malamut with the goofy Lab personality...   you have our hearts.    We are thinking about you, sending our love and praying you pull through this illness.

Dogs XL Rescue wanted to save Deuce and find him a great home.  Deuce is a stunning, 3 year old, male, 65-75 lb. Alaskan Malamute mix.  He came to us Heartworm Positive requiring lifesaving treatment.    As soon as he was in our care, he went to a loving foster home with little kids to snuggle and love.   Then things went down hill.

Deuce developed an acute and severe respiratory infection.   The heartworm treatment caused some complications on top of the decline in his respiratory status.

Now Deuce is fighting for his life.  The wonderful staff at Montgomery Vet in Gaithersburg is doing everything in their power to save him, but it is touch and go right now with his diagnosis.

We need your help with this uniquely beautiful, wonderfully goofy and loving boy!   His medical bills are in the thousands;  bills that we can cover only with your help.

He deserves a happy life, he deserves our help.  PLEASE DONATE NOW TO HELP SAVE DEUCE.

Oma Goodness!!!!

Look at that face! Holy cow! or rather... OMA GOODNESS!

Oma's shelter was begging for help. We took one look at this girl, giggled, then got serious. Did I say... Look at that face yet?!?

Well, on a serious note, Oma was examined by the shelters vet. She is a little run down right now from neglect. Before she is sharp, happy and healthy, Dogs XL Rescue had to commit to quite a medical bill.

Oma is heartworm positive and requires expensive heartworm treatment. She also has 2 spots on her skin that need to be removed, she was not spayed yet, her teeth have been neglected and have to be cleaned under anesthesia, and lastly, she has a cut on her eye that requires repairing. The prognosis for all of her "ailments" is excellent! Just wait, she will be looking at you with those sappy eyes, asking for a spot on your couch soon!

Please consider donating to Dogs XL Rescue's Critical Care Fund in order to help us care for Oma and dogs with similar plights.

Mack

When one of our shelter partners suffering, Dogs XL Rescue had to help. We grabbed Mack out of a possible horrible outcome when pits were being stolen from the shelter to be most likely be used as bait dogs. The shelter was faced with a horrible decision... do they euthanize the "pitty-looking" dogs to save them from a worse fate?

Mack is one of those dogs that was facing being stolen or euthanized. Luckily, he is safe at the vet right now getting treatment for his Heartworm positive status. The cost includes the medications, vet care and boarding at the vet to medically supervise him after his injections to make sure he is responding well.

Can you please help Dogs XL do what they do best? We save deserving dogs like Mack from horrible fates, give them the medical care they deserve and find them wonderful loving homes? The cost of his treatment is covered by donations such as yours! Can't foster? Can't help at events? Well, your donation helps a lot!

Angelina and her four Pups

Angelina and her four pups were in a shelter for weeks waiting to come to Dogs XL. The puppies had to be old enough to "safely" transport. We anxiously awaited these cute puppies!

Last weekend, started the heartbreak. When they arrived on the transport, we took one look at them and immediately rushed them to the vet! Angelina and her puppies were emaciated, failing to thrive, and lethargic. Almost right away, Alice, passed away. The vet determined that it was from dehydration, starvation, and accentuated by intestinal worms. When he looked at Angelina, it was obvious. She had not been feed enough to thrive let alone give her babies the nutrition they needed to survive.

Volunteers dedicated hours to holding, loving, and caring for the puppies in the vets office with his staff. IV's, forced feedings, transfusions.... anything to give these beautiful, deserving puppies a chance. News from the vet and volunteers kept us hoping, but apprehensive to say the least.

Two of the pups and Angelina made a turn for the better yesterday and started eating and moving around. In our hearts we are praying for this family!

Today, unfortunately, we are heartbroken and devastated. Abby (Abigail) fought hard for her life today. Held by a loving volunteer, she spent a few hours struggling to live for the life she so deserved. It was too much for this little girl. With the advice of the vet, we sadly and lovingly said goodbye to Abby.

We know that she will be loved and cared for across the Rainbow Bridge. She is running and playing and causing puppy trouble, being chased, held and hugged by a loving family that she deserved.

Dogs XL appreciates all the support and kind words that our Rescue Family provided during her struggle. The donations towards her medical bills and the bills of the other 3 puppies and Angelina really added up. We depend on you to do everything we can in cases like this and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Sweet Daisy Mae - Shot in the Head!

Daisy Mae is headed up to the Baltimore area this weekend!

It is bittersweet for all of us at Dogs XL because we are excited to have saved her and can't wait to give her the love she deserves, but sad because we know she is in pain.

Its hard to imagine anyone doing this, but someone shot Daisy Mae in the head. Miraculously she survived. However, she still has the bullet and multiple bone fragments in her head behind her eye.

Daisy Mae is happy and loves to play, but when these fragments move in her head, she is in extreme pain and her vision and function is temporary affected.

Daisy Mae is from Louisiana but unfortunately, they are not able to find the proper care for her for her extreme injury. We knew it wouldn't be easy, but we had to help her! She will be transported to the Baltimore are with the help of NUMEROUS volunteers so Dogs XL can do their best to get her the help she needs. This will involve multiple doctors opinions, neurologists, and most likely surgery.

Please consider donating. The neurological surgery that is being proposed will cost upwards of $5000! Can you help Daisy Mae get her life back? We can not do it without you! Please click here to donate to be a partner with Dogs XL with giving Daisy Mae her life back!
