Angelina and her four Pups

Angelina and her four pups were in a shelter for weeks waiting to come to Dogs XL. The puppies had to be old enough to "safely" transport. We anxiously awaited these cute puppies!

Last weekend, started the heartbreak. When they arrived on the transport, we took one look at them and immediately rushed them to the vet! Angelina and her puppies were emaciated, failing to thrive, and lethargic. Almost right away, Alice, passed away. The vet determined that it was from dehydration, starvation, and accentuated by intestinal worms. When he looked at Angelina, it was obvious. She had not been feed enough to thrive let alone give her babies the nutrition they needed to survive.

Volunteers dedicated hours to holding, loving, and caring for the puppies in the vets office with his staff. IV's, forced feedings, transfusions.... anything to give these beautiful, deserving puppies a chance. News from the vet and volunteers kept us hoping, but apprehensive to say the least.

Two of the pups and Angelina made a turn for the better yesterday and started eating and moving around. In our hearts we are praying for this family!

Today, unfortunately, we are heartbroken and devastated. Abby (Abigail) fought hard for her life today. Held by a loving volunteer, she spent a few hours struggling to live for the life she so deserved. It was too much for this little girl. With the advice of the vet, we sadly and lovingly said goodbye to Abby.

We know that she will be loved and cared for across the Rainbow Bridge. She is running and playing and causing puppy trouble, being chased, held and hugged by a loving family that she deserved.

Dogs XL appreciates all the support and kind words that our Rescue Family provided during her struggle. The donations towards her medical bills and the bills of the other 3 puppies and Angelina really added up. We depend on you to do everything we can in cases like this and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

  1. This is so sad. I have been looking for a lab puppy for my parents. We put our beloved Arnie to sleep about 8 months ago after 13 years. We had him cremated and my parents keep his ashes in a specia engraved box. I would love to adopt a rescue, but I'm afraid at 7 months pregnant I can't afford to surprise my parents
